Long Way Home

Image
The 20s are all about reflection. How often do you take time to look back and see how far you've come. We're often busy trudging forward and intently focused on the future that we forget that our past has imperative information to share with us. History repeats itself often but things never happen the same way twice. When we take time to acknowledge progress or to point our mistakes, we can know that our steps have been ordered exactly how they should be. We're taking the long way home.  Rolling hills, popping ear drums, and NPR discussion over the airwaves are some of my most vivid memories as kid taking scenic car rides with my dad. Sometimes he would just my siblings and I for a ride. We'd go to these hills that seemed vastly mountainous and we'd go zooming. I used to think we were going so far. "Wee," we'd squeal as we made our ascent in his red Volvo S70, and we reached the hill valley troughs "Haw!" we'd let out in our most ex...

King of the Hill

Image
The 20s are all about making yourself at home. There truly is no place like home. It's that one place where you feel most comfortable, safe, and warm. Home is where everything just seems to make sense and fit together, no matter how dysfunctionally chaotic things get. Home is your kingdom. Home is your fortress. Home is where you make the rules and external influences halt at the door. Take your rightful thrown as king of the hill.  The holiday season is probably a busy time of the year for most families but for mine it's quite the opposite. If only for a few days we come together, shut out the rest of the world and do nothing more than reflect on what we've been blessed with and how far we've come. We fulfill social expectations of sending holiday greetings (holiday because having your beliefs represented in the mass media is a privilege not everyone has - as in everyone who doesn't celebrate Christmas) in the mail, answering a seemingly endless amount of pho...

Only You

Image
The 20s are all about becoming a better person. We go through so many changes over the years but sometimes it takes the trivial things in life to remind us of who we want to be. There's so much growing to be done, and a heck of a lot of emotions to be felt in the process. We determine who we want to be. We choose our outlooks on life and people in general. We are the searchers of our own hearts - what does yours say deep within you? Only you know the answer to your inner questions. No one else, only you. There's something about life that makes it so profound. It always seems that when you need to hear something the most that it just creeps in and makes it's self apparent right before your eyes. As a major consumer of TV (but that Arrow finale though - anyone?) and someone who constantly has music playing, it just so happens that the episode I need to see or the song I need to hear comes on at the most opportune time. I was watching the season three finale of MTV's ...

Aging Out

Image
The 20s are all about coming to terms with imperfections. Things never happen the same way twice and will never be the same. Nothing and nobody is perfect. We're all flawed, chipped, cracked and a little off balance. We are who are complete with our not so appealing qualities. All of us have shortcomings, the sooner we realize that the better. We get older and it all becomes more apparent. We're aging out.  There's not a guide to growing up, if there was I would have read it by now. We're all trying to figure our way around this world and each other. There's no clearly defined way to do it either. One of the biggest complaints I hear from people is about their parents. Let me burst your bubble, your parents do not, I repeat, do not know everything. There comes a time in your life when you realize you've taught your parents something they never before. That day changes you forever because instead of being impervious, omniscient super humans, they are reduc...
